Periodic reviews of tertiary qualifications

Closed 10 Dec 2010

Update February 2011: A report summarising comment on the proposals is available: Submission results and summary: Mandatory review of qualifications at levels 1-6.

NZQA is seeking comment on proposals for periodic, mandatory reviews of tertiary qualifications. It is proposed that reviews would be conducted in two stages.

These stages are:

  1. An initial review, initiated by either NZQA or a qualification developer or industry; designed to reduce the duplication and proliferation of qualifications
  2. Ongoing, periodic reviews designed to ensure qualifications remain fit for purpose.

The Mandatory review of qualifications (PDF, 193KB) paper provides the rationale and objectives for each phase of the reviews. Feedback (DOC, 150KB) is also sought on the process and its effectiveness in achieving objectives.

The deadline for submissions is 10 December 2010.

Initial reviews are expected to begin in early 2011, following analysis of consultation submissions and final policy development and approval. It is expected to take around three to four years for all current qualifications to be reviewed.

The review proposal is part of a package of changes within the Targeted Review of Qualifications, aimed at reducing the proliferation and duplication of tertiary qualifications.
