outcome statements

The outcomes achieved from the learning process of a qualification and the knowledge skills and attributes of a graduate.  Each outcome statement must include information on graduate profiles, education and employment pathways.

Putanga Whakatau

Ko ngā putanga ako ēnei e kitea ana i roto i ngā tukanga ako mō ia ākonga. Kei ia putanga whakatau te hononga ki ngā pūrongo ako, huarahi ako me ngā huarahi whai mahi.

Overseas Study Assessment

This is for New Zealanders planning to study overseas for a level 7 or post-graduate qualification, they can apply for:

  • an interest-free student loan for this course of study;

  • an exemption from paying any interest on their current student loan.

Under section 253(1)(c) of the Education Act 1989, they need to supply Inland Revenue (IRD) with confirmation from NZQA that their study is comparable to levels 7, 8, 9 or 10 of the New Zealand Qualifications Framework. If currently studying overseas, they need to provide evidence to IRD that they have been enrolled full-time in their course.

Aromatawai Whakaakoranga ki Rāwāhi

He hātepe tēnei mō ngā tāngata nō Aotearoa e hiahia whakaako ana ki rāwāhi ki te whiwhi tohu kei te kaupae 7, kei te tohu paerua rānei.  Ka tonoa mō:

panel leader

The single pair of eyes with the overall responsibility for leading a panel of markers, setting the standard of marking for external assessments, the quality of marking across the panel and writing the Panel Leader's Report.

polytechnic

A polytechnic is defined as 

  • a body that was established immediately before the day on which the Education Amendment Act 1990 received the Royal assent, or is established on or after that day and before 1 January 1991, as a polytechnic, institute of technology, technical institute or community college under the Education Act 1964; or

  • (b)a body established as a polytechnic under section 162(2).

portfolio

A learner's personal collection of evidence of achievement; also a method of gathering evidence.  Is used as a form of external assessment by some subjects.

kōpaki

Ko te kohinga o ngā taunaki whakatūtukitanga o tētahi ākonga; he huarahi kohi taunaki hoki. He taunakitanga aromatawai hoki mō ētahi marautanga ako.

Pre-Assessment Result (PRA)

A pre-assessment of a qualification that was gained outside New Zealand is required for an 'Expression of Interest' under Immigration NZ's Skilled Migrant Category. A PAR is not sufficient for determining suitability for meeting Immigration New Zealand's Long Term Skill Shortage List (LTSSL) requirements. It is a provisional and non-binding assessment that does not require any qualifications or supporting documents to be sent to NZQA.  It does not guarantee the result of any future assessment by NZQA.

Hua Matatau Akahu

Me whakatutuki ngā mahi matatau akahu mō ngā tohu ka whiwhia kei waho o Aotearoa mēnā he “Whakaputanga Whakaaro” te kaupapa ki tā te wāhanga pūkenga kaiheke o te tari o Immigration New Zealand.  Ehara i te mea he rawaka te hua matatau akahu kia whakatauhia mēnā e tika ana mō ngā whakaritenga e ai ki te Long Term Skill Shortage List (LTSSL) o Aotearoa.  He aromatawai takitaro noa, ā, he aromatawai mana kore noa.  Kāore e hiahiatia ana e te Mana Tohu Mātauranga o Aotearoa ngā tohu me ngā kōrero taunaki.  Ehara i te mea he whakaoati hei whai hua mō tētahi aromatawai ā muri ake nei.

Principal's Nominee

A staff member nominated by the principal of a school, who carries out duties and responsibilities on behalf of the school and liaises with NZQA for the purpose of the administration of all NZQA rules and procedures.

(Te) Tautapa a te Tumuaki

Ko tētahi kaimahi ka waitohutia e te tumuaki o te kura, hei mahi i ngā mahi, hei pīkau hoki i ngā kawenga mō te kura, ā, hei takawaenga me NZQA e pā ana ki te whakahaerenga o ngā kaupapa me ngā manatūnga a NZQA.

Private Training Establishment (PTE) 

A private organisation, registered by NZQA, providing education and/or training (refer to section 159(1) of the Education Act 1989).

Notes:

Some are owned by state organisations so are owned by the State.

If they are registered, they should be under "registered PTE" under Part 18 of the Education Act 1989.

programme (of study)

A coherent arrangement of learning or training that is based on clear and consistent aims, content, outcomes and assessment practices, and which leads to a qualification on the NZQF.

akoranga (hei whai)

Ko te akoranga kua whakamanatia hei hōtaka ako pipiri, whakangungu pipiri rānei ka taketake mai i ngā whāinga, ngā mōhiotanga, ngā hua o te ako me ngā ritenga aromatawai mārama, hei taumata ki tētahi tohu e kitea ana i te Taura Here Tohu Mātauranga o Aotearoa.

protected terms

Organisational and qualifications titles that cannot be used without authority: including university, polytechnic, institute of technology, college of education; degree, Bachelor, Master, doctor or postgraduate, and granting awards containing the words, "National/New Zealand".

ingoa manatā

Ko ngā taitara ā-whakahaere, ā-tohu mātauranga hoki e kore e taea te whakamahi ki te kore e whakamanatia: tae atu ki ngā whare wānanga, kuratini, kāreti mātauranga; tohu mātauranga whare wānanga (degree), Tohu Paetahi, Paerua, Kairangi, Pōkaitahi ā-Motu/o Aotearoa, Pōkaitahi ā-Motu/o Aotearoa.

provider 

An organisation supplying education and/or training and/or assessment services; includes schools, institutes, private training establishments and government training establishments.

kaituku mātauranga

Ko tētahi kaiwhakahaere  ka tuku i ngā ratonga mātauranga me/te whakangungu rānei me te aromatawai /ratonga aromatawai rānei; tae atu ki ngā kura, kuratini, kāreti mātauranga, whare whakangungu tūmataiti, whare whakangungu kāwanatanga.

provisional entrance

A means of entrance to university for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents under 20 years of age who have left school on completion of year 12. With the phasing in of the National Certificate of Educational Achievement the nomenclature used by the universities is changing to discretionary entrance (For details see the Universities New Zealand website). 

whakauru takitaro

Ko tētahi huarahi whakauru ki te whare wānanga mō ngā kirirarau me ngā tāngata noho tūturu o Aotearoa i raro i te 20 tau te pakeke kua oti te tau 12, ā, kua mutu i te kura. qualification

Formal certification for a given purpose of the achievement of specified learning outcomes to a given standard.

(te) urunga

Ko ngā whakaritenga mō te tiwhiketetanga kua whakawhiwhia i runga i ngā tūtukitanga  whakahirahira ā-paetae, ā-paerewa paetae.

qualification developer

An organisation that develops qualifications that are submitted for approval to a quality assurance body; the development process must involve and have the support of the appropriately recognised expert bodies related to the subject title and major content of the qualification.

kaihanga tohu mātauranga

Ko tētahi whakahaere ka whakawhanake i ngā tohu mātauranga ka tāpaetia ki tētahi rōpū whakaū i te kounga mā taua rōpū anō hei whakamana; me matua whai wāhi i te hātepe whakawhanake, te tautoko o ngā rōpū kua mōhiotia he mātanga i roto i te taitara o te kaupapa ako me te mōhiotanga matua o te tohu mātauranga.

quality assurance 

Refers to the quality assurance framework which consists of initial entry processes for programme approval and accreditation registration of PTEs, and consent to assess; self-assessment by TEOs; external evaluation and review; and responses to non-compliance with the Education Act 1989.

whakaū i te kounga

 quality assurance body

An organisation that exercises certain powers of NZQA under section 260 of the Education Act 1989.  Current QABs are NZQA and the New Zealand Vice-Chancellors' Committee (also known as Universities New Zealand)

Ko Te Mana Tohu Mātauranga o Aotearoa (NZQA) me Te Pōkai Tara o Aotearoa (e mōhiotia ana hoki ko Ngā Whare Wānanga o Aotearoa).

quality assured qualification

A qualification that is listed on the NZQF.

quality management system

Coherent management activity that ensures quality policies and objectives are set, implemented and evaluated.

RCC

Recognition of Current Competencies (See recognition of prior learning).

range statements

Range statements provide clarification of the standard, or an outline of the critical evidence to be considered in assessment, to ensure that standards have been met. They may also provide context and clarify limits. Range statements can apply to all outcomes in the standard, an element outcome, or a performance criterion.

huinga

Mā te tauākī huinga e tautuhi ai te paerewa, he whakarāpopotonga rānei o te taunaki mōhio ka whakaaroarotia i roto i te aromatawai, e pūmau ai kua tutuki ngā paerewa. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) 

"Recognition of prior learning" means a process that involves formal assessment of a student's relevant and current knowledge and skills (gained through prior learning) to determine achievement of learning outcomes of a qualification for the purpose of awarding credit towards that qualification.  RPL does not include credit recognition and transfer (See NZQF Qualification Listing and Operational Rules).

reconsideration 

Reconsiderations apply to externally assessed written examinations only.

Candidates may apply for a reconsideration if they believe that a paper has not been marked correctly.

(te) whakaaro anō

Ko te whakaaro anō e hāngai noa ana ki ngā whakamātautau ā-waho.

Ka āhei ngā ākonga te tono mō te whakaaro anō i runga i te whakapono whaiaro kīhai i tika ngā pūnaha aromatawai.

Record of Achievement 

An individual learner's transcript of unit standards and achievement standards credited and national qualifications completed, provided by NZQA from a national database (More details). 

Pūrongo Ako

Ko te rārangi o ngā paerewa, ngā paerewa paetae me ngā tohu mātauranga kua tūtuki i tētahi ākonga, ka tukua e NZQA mai i tētahi pātengi raraunga ā-motu (He kōrero anō). 

registered assessor 

An assessor registered by a national standards-setting body to assess learners. Assessment usually take place in the workplace.

kaiaromatawai kua rēhitatia

Ko tētahi kaiaromatawai kua rēhitatia e tētahi whakaruruhau kua whakamanatia hei aromatawai i ngā ākonga. Ka whakahaeretia te aromatawai i te wāhi mahi.

registration (of private training establishments)

Process for ensuring that a private training establishment is able to provide a sound and stable learning environment; establishments are required to be registered before they can be accredited. 

Rēhitatanga (o ngā whare whakangungu tūmataiti)

Ko tētahi hātepe e hua ai ka āhei tētahi whare whakangungu tūmataiti te tuku i tētahi wāhi ako pūmau, pai hoki; kia rēhitatia ngā whakahere i mua i te whakamanatanga.

registration (of unit standards, achievement standards)

A process that ensures unit standards, and achievement standards,  as set out in the Directory of Assessment Standards Listing and Operational Rules 2011, have received appropriate national endorsement and meet the technical requirements of NZQA; the process concludes when these are entered onto the DAS database; standards are reviewed periodically (More details). 

Rēhitatanga (o ngā paerewa, ngā paerewa paetae, me ngā tohu mātauranga)

Supplying information on the progress and achievements of a learner.

review 

If a candidate believes a processing error has been made in the marking of their external assessment material (eg a section of work not marked, the incorrect transfer of grades or marks), he or she can ask for a review. Review requests must be made in writing and within a specified timeframe.

arotake
