143,000 students prepare for examinations

More than 143,000 candidates are preparing for this year's NCEA and NZ Scholarship exams being held from November 10 to November 30.

The first exams are Level 1 Media Studies and NZ Scholarship Drama on Thursday, November 10 at 9.30am.

A total of 1.5 million individual standard entries have been entered for the exams. This exam period consists of 119 NCEA and NZ Scholarship exam sessions, with another 22 non-exam based external assessments (including portfolio and language assessments).

This year’s largest exam session is Level 1 English with nearly 47,000 candidates on Wednesday, November 16 at 9.30am. The smallest is NZ Scholarship Latin, with 29 candidates on Monday, November 21 at 2pm.

This week the NZQA website will be visited by more than 40,000 users every day.  Around 70,000 users traditionally visit NZQA’s website on the day prior to the start of exams.

This year there are:

  • 64,737 candidates entered at Level 1
  • 56,286 candidates at Level 2
  • 38,655 candidates at Level 3.
  • 10,203 candidates have entered 33 NZ Scholarship subjects.

A team of just over 1,825 markers from around the country will mark all papers by the end of the year, with NCEA results scheduled to go online in the first half of January.

The Result Notices will not be mailed out this year so all students wanting to receive a copy in the mail will need to request it via the NZQA website.

Examination 2011 facts and figures:

  • 143,520 candidates have entered a total of 1,586,956 million entries across 373 standards
  • The largest exam is Level 1 English with 46,967 entries, followed by Level 1 Mathematics with 39,199
  • There are 1,825 markers, and around 3,400 Exam Centre Managers and supervisors
  • There are 400 exam centres in New Zealand, 6 in the Cook Islands and 1 in Niue
  • There are 495 candidates in the Cook Islands and 64 in Niue.
