2017 NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship attainment data available

11 Apr 2018

The 2017 NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship attainment data is now available here.

Each year NZQA produces its annual statistics report – Annual Report on NCEA & New Zealand Scholarship Data & Statistics.  The report provides a detailed summary of NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship attainment data and related statistics.  This report will be available at the end of May 2018.

The table below presents a summary of roll-based NCEA attainment[1] statistics by year level for 2017, with attainment percentages for the last five years included for comparison purposes (2013 to 2017).

Table 1

Also attached are further tables with a more detailed breakdown of national attainment by ethnicity, gender, and decile for the last five years.

Please note that the 2017 NCEA results will be the last year that attainment is reported using the roll-based statistical measure. NZQA and the Ministry of Education have combined information sources to develop an updated measure of NCEA attainment.  This will be used to report on NCEA attainment for the 2018 school year in January 2019.

NZQA will be consulting with schools during June and July on how the new measure of NCEA attainment should apply when reporting school-level NCEA attainment.

[1] The roll-based attainment measure reports the number of students in a year level attaining a qualification, divided by the number of students in that year level nationally. The denominator is sourced from roll data provided by schools to the Ministry of Education as at 1 July. The roll-based attainment data in the tables in this press release is current year attainment only.  Using the 2017 Year 12 NCEA Level 2 attainment as an example, it includes only the attainment of Year 12 students who attained NCEA Level 2 in 2017.
