New Zealand Scholarship award winners to be recognised at Parliament

05 May 2010

Minister of Education, the Hon Anne Tolley will host the Top Scholar ceremony, honouring the winners of the 2009 New Zealand Scholarship Awards, at Parliament on Thursday, 6 May, 2010.

The Governor General, His Excellency, The Honourable Sir Anand Satyanand will co-present awards to eight Premier and 28 Top Subject scholars.

Eight 2009 students gained Premier Awards. These awards carry a monetary award of $10,000 a year for three years of tertiary study, provided students maintain at least a "B" grade average in their tertiary studies in New Zealand.

Top Subject Scholars will receive $2,000 each year for three years as long as students maintain a "B" grade in their tertiary studies in New Zealand.

NZQA Deputy Chief Executive, Qualifications, Bali Haque, said Scholarship was motivating an increasing number of students.

"We are very impressed by the results of all Scholarship Award winners in 2009, and particularly impressed by the growing number of students who are participating in Scholarship, year after year. We would like to congratulate all students who have achieved Scholarships in a very competitive environment."

Of 9,096 students that entered Scholarship exams last year, 2,065 were successful in achieving Scholarship awards.

Note: Media are welcome to attend the event at 9.45am in the Banquet Hall, Parliament.

The official ceremony will run from 10-11.15am, followed by official photographs.
