2-way clash

Multi-level clash in same subject: Candidate sits all standards in morning session, with possibility of extra time if required. Hold over lunchtime until 2.45pm when first candidates allowed out of afternoon session.
2 examinations timetabled for the same session

Candidate sits higher NQF level examination at scheduled time.
Examinations with technology or special sessions associated with them, e.g. languages' listening passages, must be sat at the scheduled time.

Hold over lunchtime and hand over to ECM at start of afternoon examination.

3-way clash

Multi-level clash (2 levels of 1 subject) and a second subject on the same day Candidate sits all standards relating to a single subject in one session, with possibility of extra time if required; second examination to be sat at scheduled time. Hold over lunchtime and hand over to ECM at start of afternoon examination.
3 examinations timetabled on the same day

Manage external entries to reduce number of standards to be sat in one or all sessions. Check time allowances for each standard and decide whether 3 three-hour sessions is warranted, or if it can be managed within 2 elongated sessions.

Maximum 9-hour examination day.

Early start and late finish to the examination day with supervised morning and afternoon breaks if doing the examinations in three sessions, or a supervised lunch break if combining sessions.  

No overnight sequestering for NCEA.

3-way clash (including Scholarship)

Scholarship/ NCEA Level 3 clashes

Discuss the Scholarship entry with the candidate and teacher. (Some candidates in this position elect to concentrate on Level 3 and sit only 2 examinations.) Check time allowances for each standard and decide whether three three-hour sessions is warranted.

Manage external entries to reduce number of standards to be sat in one or all sessions.

Maximum 9-hour exam day. For Scholarship candidates for whom sitting three examinations in a single day would be problematic, seek approval from NZQA to consider overnight sequestering. Inform candidate that agreement will be given only if the school principal or delegate is prepared to sequester the candidate at the candidate's expense.

Early start and late finish to the exam day with supervised morning and afternoon breaks, if doing the exams in three sessions, or a supervised lunch break if combining sessions.
For overnight sequestering, MOU to be established and signed by all parties.

No sequestering is possible for Scholarship/NCEA Level 2 clashes.

Religious reason for Scholarship candidate not sitting on Saturday

For overnight sequestering, MOU to be established and signed by all parties.

Early or late start in exceptional circumstances

Candidate has other immovable commitments on the examination day.

Discuss situation, priorities and options with NZQA. Manage external entries to reduce number of standards to be sat in the session/s.

Check time allowances for each standard. Inform the candidate that agreement for an early start will be given only if a suitable supervisor can be found. If sitting an afternoon exam in the morning session lunchtime sequestering will be required.

 

For an early start, ensure the candidate remains sequestered until the first 45 minutes of the scheduled exam has elapsed.

For a late start, ensure the candidate is sequestered from the scheduled start time of the examination.

MOU to be established and signed by all parties.

Associated costs

When a candidate has elected to sit an examination at other than the published time and NZQA has agreed, any actual and reasonable fees associated with supervision, including sequestering, may be charged.
