2015 Online Practice Examinations: registration of interest

Online practice examinations

On 27 May 2015 (A2015/017 Computer Based assessments 2015 eMCAT, French and Science) NZQA indicated that Online Practice Examinations (OPE) will be provided for two standards.

The standards are:

  • French Level 1, 90878:  Demonstrate understanding of a variety of spoken French texts on areas of most immediate relevance.
  • Science Level 1 90940:  Demonstrate understanding of aspects of mechanics.

Online practice examinations

NZQA will develop a new OPE for 2015 that students and teachers will be able to access to practise for end-of-year NCEA examinations. Results from these OPEs may be used for Derived Grades, if required. These OPEs will be available through the Education Perfect digital platform for the last two weeks of term three and the first two weeks of term four. The online practice examinations are NZQA’s first step on the journey towards NCEA assessment being online by 2020.

Aspects that schools will need to consider if they wish to offer the OPE(s)

  • NZQA will produce the OPE but schools will be responsible for managing it in an appropriate assessment environment.
  • Schools will be responsible for marking the OPE and providing feedback to students.
  • Schools and students that take part will be asked to provide NZQA with feedback.
  • Online activities, hosted on the Education Perfect website, will be available for two weeks prior to the practice examination so that students can become familiar with the system.
  • There will be no cost to students taking part in the OPE.

Development and marking process for the 2015 online practice examinations

A completely new online examination for each standard will be specifically designed for assessment in an online environment. The lessons from these trial online examinations will inform NZQA’s understanding of the development and delivery of online examinations moving forward.

The feedback obtained from teachers and students will be critical in informing the future development of other online examinations, and how best to manage them.

Schools registration of intention to take part in 2015 Online Practice Examinations

NZQA would now like to invite schools to register their interest in taking part in the 2015 OPE.

Before registering, schools need to read the technical specifications on the NZQA website to ensure they have the capability to deliver the examinations, and then complete the Registration of Interest form.

Registration closes 24 June 2015 and all schools will be informed of the outcome by 29 June 2015. Please note these dates differ from those previously published. Those schools who have already registered their interest through Education Perfect do not need to re-register through NZQA.

To ensure the pilot can be successfully managed by NZQA and schools, the number of students taking part in each standard will be limited to 5000. If there is interest above the capped number, a selection process will be used and schools will be notified of the outcome.
