Assessment specifications for level 2 and 3 languages

The Assessment Specifications for level 2 and level 3 Languages (Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish) have been amended following feedback from the sector.

The listening and reading passages for the relevant standards at level 2 and 3 will be drawn from existing Vocabulary Lists, not the new Appendices that have been developed for the new standards. To ensure that no candidate is disadvantaged, all words in the passages that are not in the Vocabulary Lists will be glossed if they are essential to the understanding of the passages.

Candidates using the Appendices (new Vocabulary Lists) will not be disadvantaged because essential words that are not in the Appendices will be glossed.

Teachers should not need to alter their programmes as a result of this update.

The updated specifications are now available on the NZQA website through the subject-specific pages.

The existing Vocabulary and new Appendices lists are also available as PDF documents on the relevant subject-specific pages under the sub-heading “Other Subject Resources”.

  • Existing Vocabulary lists are titled “Vocabulary level …”
  • The new Appendices vocabulary lists are titled “Appendix (New Vocabulary List)”
