Calculator use in NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship examinations 2015

Schools are requested to advise candidates that, in line with 2015 assessment specifications, approved calculators may only be used in specified examinations, as follows:

Any level of:

  • Accounting
  • Agricultural and Horticultural Science
  • Business Studies
  • Calculus
  • Chemistry
  • Economics
  • Geography
  • Mathematics with Statistics
  • Physics
  • Statistics

Plus:

  • NCEA Level 1 Home Economics, and
  • NCEA Level 1 Science.

Clearing calculator memory

Calculators brought for use in any of the above examinations must have their memories set to default settings prior to the start of the examination, by staff familiar with this process.

A candidate who refuses to allow their calculator memory to be reset will not be allowed use of the calculator during the examination.

All other examinations

Calculators may not be brought into any other examinations, unless secured in a candidate’s emergency evacuation pack and placed under their chair before the start of the examination.

A candidate who brings an unsecured calculator into any examination not listed above will be considered to be in breach of NZQA’s Rules and Procedures.
