Changes to the assessment of external standards for Level 2 and Level 3 Design and Visual Communication (DVC)

Changes will be made to:

  • Marking Panels
  • Page Limits
  • Assessment Specifications

Changes are being made to the assessment of external standards for Level 2 and Level 3 Design and Visual Communication (DVC) to enable a stronger focus on the achievement criteria for each standard being assessed and to reduce workload for both candidates and teachers. These changes are NOT expected to require any revision or change to teaching.

Marking Panels

For 2017, each standard at both Level 2 and Level 3 will be assessed by a separate panel of markers. This will enable a stronger focus on the achievement criteria for each standard being assessed and will enable markers to assess work relating to their specialist area of knowledge and expertise. For some standards, this will allow candidate work to be submitted and assessed digitally.

Page Limits

The number of pages indicated has been reduced from earlier years.  Recommended page limits for each standard will now replace limits previously specified for a portfolio that included all standards for which candidates were submitting evidence.

This is intended to address candidate and teacher workload issues, whilst still ensuring candidates submit sufficient evidence to demonstrate achievement against the standards. These are recommended limits. All work submitted will be marked, but it is strongly recommended that candidate submissions do not exceed these limits excessively.

Assessment Specifications

It is essential that students and teachers of DVC refer to the 2017 Assessment Specifications documents to view the number of pages recommended for each standard.

These documents will be available during December 2016 on the NZQA DVC Subject Resources page.

Teaching and Learning Programmes

These changes are NOT expected to require any revision or change to teaching.

The changes outlined above do not apply to the assessment of Level 1 DVC.  Level 1 portfolios will still contain up to three standards all being assessed by one team of markers
