Clarification of Derived Grade Processes

Processes and evidence for derived grades assure NZQA that the reported grade is based on pre-existing, valid, standard-specific evidence which meets the requirements of the standard.

What quality assurance processes give you confidence that the assessment tool is fit for purpose?

  • Practice examination developed “in-house” and critiqued in the same way that all internal assessments are critiqued.
  • Practice examination purchased from a secure source such as the subject association and checked against the achievement standard.
  • Practice examination purchased from a commercial source and checked against the achievement criteria of the standard.
  • Practice examination provided by a colleague in another school and critiqued in the same way that all internal assessments are critiqued.
  • Practice online examination developed by NZQA and provided by Education Perfect.

How can derived grades be quality assured?

  • Where a “second pair of eyes” procedure has been used, justification of the derived grade could be through, for example:
    • the use of panel marking
    • a sample of grade boundaries from marked examination papers having been checked by a colleague in the department
    • evidence derived from a previous end-of-topic test held under examination conditions.
  • Where a suitably qualified “second pair of eyes” is not readily available, justification of the derived grade could be through, for example:
    • external moderation agreement rates that provide confidence in assessor judgements
    • staff involvement with external examination marking for this standard/subject/level to provide confidence in assessor judgements
    • consultation on teacher’s use of assessment schedules, NZQA exemplars and past student answer booklets that were used as benchmarks, to provide confidence in assessor judgements
    • comparison of practice examination grades with that cohort’s NZQA external examination grades for the same year, to provide confidence in assessor judgements.
