Computer-based assessments in 2015

You may be aware that the New Zealand Qualifications Authority is transforming its paper-based assessment system to a digital system. This vision will be realised as increasing numbers of students undertake their assessments using a computer and the internet.

This year NZQA is conducting an electronic pilot using the Mathematics Common Assessment Task and trials involving two standards. These are:

  • French Level 1, Achievement Standard 90878: Demonstrate understanding of a variety of spoken French texts on areas of most immediate relevance
  • Science Level 1, Achievement Standard 90940: Demonstrate understanding of aspects of mechanics.

To date, 232 secondary schools in New Zealand are participating in the project.

Guidelines for organising and managing digital assessments have been published. These can be found here. Please note the technical specifications are relevant for the pilot and trials only. As NZQA introduces more online examinations it is expected that further technical specifications will be developed to encompass the wide variety of devices and browsers used in schools.
