NCEA Level 1 Mathematics and Statistics 91027 (MCAT) Resources

This circular provides information about:

  • Provision of MCAT resources to support teachers
  • MCAT assessment specifications
  • MCAT assessment dates for 2017

Provision of MCAT Resources

In response to requests from teachers, NZQA will provide:

  • Annotated exemplars of marked student work from the 2016 MCAT, at different levels of achievement, will be published by the end of February 2017 on the NZQA Mathematics and Statistics Subject Resources page.
  • Sample questions to illustrate the problem-solving focus of this standard and support the Assessment Specifications will be published by the end of February 2017 on the NZQA Mathematics and Statistics Subject Resources page.
  • Assessment Report: This report is published in late March, and provides commentary on the recently-completed external examinations. Because of the particular interest in the 2016 MCAT assessment, this report will include a detailed analysis of the questions of this assessment, clarifying links between assessment task, achievement standard, and NZ Curriculum. The assessment report will be published on the NZQA Mathematics and Statistics Subject Resources page.

Assessment Specifications

These provide the assessment parameters for each externally assessed standard and cover information such as the format of the examination paper and context of questions (where appropriate) as well as equipment candidates can bring and use.

Teachers should read the 2017 Assessment Specifications on the NZQA Mathematics and Statistics Subject Resources page for Level 1 Mathematics and Statistics, which contain information about the intent and style of questions that are to be expected in the 2017 external assessments for Level 1 Mathematics and Statistics (including 91027 MCAT).

MCAT assessment dates for 2017

The MCAT is to be assessed in schools on two days:

  • Tuesday 19 September 2017

and/or

  • Thursday 21 September 2017.

Schools determine the day on which students will sit the MCAT.
