Eligibility for Credit Inclusion for earthquake-affected students for NCEA Level 3 and University Entrance in 2011

NZQA has developed a Credit Inclusion process (PDF, 8.6KB) for students affected by the Christchurch Earthquakes who, despite all other NZQA initiatives, still fall short of the NCEA Level 3 and/or University Entrance requirements, because their teaching and learning environment has continued to be significantly disrupted in 2011.

Eligibility for Christchurch Earthquake Credit Inclusion

Students who have narrowly missed being awarded Level 3 NCEA or University Entrance and who:

 or

may apply for up to six unspecified credits towards level 3 NCEA. Three of these unspecified credits may also be used towards the 42 credits required for University Entrance.

Students who moved out of Christchurch after the 22 February earthquake are eligible to apply for Christchurch Earthquake Credit Inclusion provided their application is supported by their new school.

Schools are advised to consider personal hardship indicators, published by the Ministry of Education in relation to Canterbury Earthquake Scholarships, when identifying likely applicants. These include changes in:

  • personal well-being
  • family/whanau or care circumstances
  • home circumstances
  • schooling arrangements.

Unspecified credits

These unspecified credits will not be assigned to any Course or Subject and they will not contribute to either the University Entrance literacy or numeracy requirement.

Application process

Applications may be made after the release of results in January, before the closing date of 17 February 2012. Universities will be advised where unspecified credits are used for University Entrance.

Procedure for schools:

  • Use school results data and personal hardship indicators to identify candidates who would be likely applicants.
  • Receive completed forms from applicants by Friday 10 February 2012.
  • PN or Principal to complete the form with the school’s supporting statement (see personal hardship indicators).
  • Mail the form, or scan and attach it to an email, to the address supplied on the form, to reach NZQA by Friday 17 February 2012.
