Derived Grade process for Visual Arts external assessment in 2011

The Derived grade process is available for a candidate who is disadvantaged through illness or misadventure, or who considers that their performance in an external assessment has been seriously impaired because of exceptional circumstances beyond their control.

Levels 1 and 2

Schools should use their internal assessment procedures for level 1 and 2 Visual Arts externally assessed standards, as assessment takes place in schools. Procedures for gathering evidence of achievement and missed or late assessment should assist teachers ensure they have documented evidence for the Provisional grade entered for students. Refer to NZQA information for Level 3 for guidance.

Scholarship

There is no derived grade process for NZ Scholarship standards.

Level 3

The derived grade process is available for candidates entered in NCEA level 3 Visual Arts external assessment in 2011.

Information on the derived grade process for level 3 Visual Arts can be accessed on the NZQA website on the Visual Arts resource page

It includes the:

  • policy statement
  • eligibility criteria
  • application process
  • application form (to be photocopied as required).

The derived grade process and due date for level 3 Visual Arts external assessment differ from the process for paper-based external assessment because of the need to identify portfolios for review at the assessment venue.

Derived grade applications for Visual Arts level 3 external assessment are made on the VA Derived Grade Application form, through the Principal’s Nominee, and the portfolio of work must be identified by use of the coloured label.

  • The VA Derived Grade Application form contains sections to be completed by the candidate, a medical practitioner (if required) and the school. Only one application is required per candidate, for one or more Visual Arts level 3 external standards.
  • Each portfolio must carry a coloured label identifying it as a derived grade application. These will be mailed to schools by Friday 30 September 2011.

Completed derived grade applications must arrive at NZQA no later than Wednesday 9 November 2011.
