Derived Grade process for Visual Arts external assessment

The NZQA derived grade process is available for candidates entered in externally-assessed level 3 Visual Arts standards in 2010.

The following information on the derived grade process for level 3 Visual Arts can be accessed on the NZQA website Visual Arts – Level 3:

  • policy statement
  • eligibility criteria
  • application process
  • application form (to be photocopied as required).

The derived grade process and due date for level 3 Visual Arts external assessment differ from those for all other external assessments because of the need to identify portfolios for review at the assessment venue.

Derived grade applications for Visual Arts level 3 external assessment are made by the school through the Principal’s Nominee and completed applications are to arrive at NZQA no later than Wednesday, 10 November 2010.

The application form contains sections to be completed by the candidate, a medical practitioner (if required) and the school. Only one application is required for one or more Visual Arts level 3 external standards.

Each portfolio must carry a coloured label identifying it as having a derived grade application. These will be mailed to schools by Friday, 15 October 2010.

  • The NZQA derived grade process is NOT available for Scholarship.
  • For level 1 and 2 externally-assessed Visual Arts standards, assessment takes place in the school. Therefore, schools must apply their own policies and procedures for any situations that arise. Schools will use their missed and late assessment procedures and/or the policy for recognising achievement during the assessment process and prior to verification. In all cases, standard-specific, authentic and verifiable evidence is the basis for awarding a grade. For any queries, contact the School Relationship Manager for your school.
