New Zealand Qualifications Framework
S2010/019 - 27 Jul 2010
The New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) Te Taura Here Tohu Mātauranga o Aotearoa was launched on 1 July 2010.
The NZQF replaces the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and Register of Quality Assured Qualifications (KiwiQuals).
During 2008 and 2009, NZQA led a targeted review of the qualifications system, focussing on certificates and diplomas at levels 1 to 6. The purpose of the review was to identify if there were better ways to ensure qualifications met the current and future requirements of learners, industry and other stakeholders.
One finding was that learners struggled to find their way through the qualifications system and employers could not always be confident that potential employees had the skills and knowledge they required. The review recommended changes to strengthen and unify the New Zealand qualifications system and to ensure that the NZQF became the definitive source for accurate and current information on qualifications.
You can search the New Zealand Qualifications Framework to:
- find all quality assured qualifications available in New Zealand
- compare different qualifications and see which education providers are offering them, or which industry training organisations can arrange training. This is important when making decisions on what qualifications are available, when and where to study.
- see what level a qualification is at and the kinds of skills you could expect to gain through completing that qualification.

Directory of Assessment Standards (DAS)
The Directory of Assessment Standards lists all quality assured unit and achievement standards, known collectively as “assessment standards”. The assessment standards listed on the Directory can contribute to national qualifications.
