Current University Entrance requirement update

The NZQA Board has agreed that the list of approved subjects for university entrance (UE) will consist of subjects derived from the New Zealand Curriculum with achievement standards at Level 3.  Because of this, the list is being up-dated from 2012 to apply to the current UE requirement.  While these additional subjects have both unit and achievement standards, from 2014 only achievement standards will contribute to the approved subjects.

Changes to the list of Approved Subjects for 2012 – 2013

While the current UE requirement continues to apply for 2011, 2012 and 2013, there will be some changes to the list of approved subjects.

  • From 2012, the following subjects will be added:
    • Business Studies (domain Business Studies)
    • Education for Sustainability (domain Environmental Sustainability)
    • Home Economics (domain Food Technology and Nutrition and AS90535)
    • Religious Studies (domain Understanding Religion)
  • From 2012 students will be able to count both Te Reo Māori and Te Reo Rangatira as separate subjects on the list (currently it must be one subject or the other)
    • Te Reo Māori (domains Kōrero, Pānui, Tuhituhi and Whakarongo)
    • Te Reo Rangatira (domain Te Reo Rangatira)
  • From 2013, there will be a number of changes as subject names are changed and new curriculum subjects are added.  For example, Graphics becomes Design and Visual Communication; Earth and Space Science and Processing Technologies are new curriculum areas. Further information will be available by the end of 2011.

Changes to UE numeracy and literacy for the current requirement

The following changes were announced in SecQual S2011/029 University Entrance numeracy and literacy requirements

  • Reminder of changes from 2011

The current UE requirement continues to apply in 2011.  However, three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626 and 26627) have been added to contribute to the existing UE numeracy requirement.

  • Reminder of changes from 2012

The current UE requirement continues to apply in 2012.  Some additional standards have been identified as meeting the current UE literacy requirement for reading and writing in 2012 (see details of the standards meeting the UE literacy requirement).  See above regarding changes to the list of approved subjects.

  • Reminder of changes from 2013

The current UE requirement continues to apply in 2013.  See above regarding changes to the list of approved subjects.
