QA News March 2011

Chief Executive's Foreword

At NZQA we are working on ways to close any gap between what you, our clients, expect from us and the ways we deliver those services.

We want it to be easy for you to contact us, speak to the right person, and if you need to talk to another section, have a seamless transfer.  All of the ways we communicate with you – by phone, in person, by letter or email, via website – should be complementary and consistent.

Some of the ways we’ll improve our communication include: reducing our use of jargon, working to increase use of plain English, and maintaining high quality interactions such as client functions and sector consultation.

Talk to us and let us know how we can improve our communications.

In this issue of QA News I’d like to highlight our work with the tertiary sector. Qualification reviews, to reduce the number of certificates and diplomas, are getting underway this month. Specific industries have been targeted to kick off the review process and I urge qualification developers to get involved.

In the secondary area, we’re supporting schools and teachers as they implement the new Achievement Standards.

We’re continuing work to help whānau understand NCEA with the roll out of a newly designed information toolkit. Building on successful whānau workshops in 2010, NZQA, along with other education sector agencies and Te Puni Kōkiri, are working together to get whānau engaged. The idea of the toolkit is to simplify NCEA down to its ‘nuts and bolts’ and support whānau to take action towards improving NCEA achievement levels.

I hope your year’s got off to a good start, and we look forward to working with you.
