The NZQA National Assessment Facilitators

The Secondary Examinations Team has approximately 28 members and is made up of National Assessment Facilitators and Editors. Support is provided to the team by 9 administrative staff.

National Assessment Facilitators

All of the team members have at least one thing in common, they are passionate about the work they do, and the fact that the work they do has a national impact. The team is supportive and friendly and there is a high level of interaction at a professional level.

Name: Alan Newall
Job Title: National Assessment Facilitator - Team Leader
Subject(s): English, Agriculture and Horticulture
Length of Service: 7 years
Background: I have worked in five secondary schools over 34 years, most recently as a Deputy Principal, and also have had responsibility for curriculum, commerce, careers, gateway and pastoral needs of seniors.
  Name: Eng Lim Lawrey
Job Title: National Assessment Facilitator
Subject(s): Business Studies and Economics
Length of Service: 7 years
Background: Prior to NZQA, I held various positions in a large Auckland school including Director of ICT and Director of Student Pathways.  I have also been involved with pre-service teacher training, external marking and moderation.

Background: Secondary school physics teaching for 30 years. I marked science and physics external exams for many of those years. I began working at NZQA as physics National Assessment Moderator, and after two years joined the Secondary Examinations team as a NAF.

Nigel Name: Nigel Evans
Job Title: National Assessment Facilitator
Subject(s): Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Spanish
Length of Service: 2 years
Background: Senior Advisor at the Ministry of Education. Prior to that, I worked as a communications consultant, as a producer for an e-learning services and interactive media production company and manager-editor of Newspapers in Education for The Dominion and The Evening Post. I have taught in schools and universities in Papua New Guinea and New Zealand.
Name: Manisha Sukha
Job Title: Business Process Support Analyst
Length of Service: 6 years
Background: I have worked extensively in projects across the banking and financial sector both as a Project Manager and Business Analyst. I have implemented systems enhancements and designed screens for a number of systems, including Internet Banking. I have also been contracted with the Ministry of Education to document their early childcare centre (ECC) processes and assist in the redevelopment of their ECC systems.
Name: Sarah Cameron
Job Title: Editor
Length of Service: 8 years
Background: My editorial experience began at Reader’s Digest in Sydney in 2000, where I worked on developing, copywriting, and editing advertising sales material. I completed a Book Editing and Publishing Diploma and further work as a freelance copywriter and editor in Sydney, before returning to New Zealand and joining NZQA as an Editor in 2008.
Name: Steve Bargh
Job Title: Digital Assessment Programme Leader
Subject(s): Technology, Graphics, Geography, Music, Dance, Visual Arts, Classical Studies, Physical Education, Education for Sustainability as a NAF, now an overview of the team’s processes.
Length of Service: 15 years
Background: A secondary school teacher for 17 years, finishing up as HOD PE prior to joining NZQA in 2001. I started as part of the NCEA Implementation Team and became a NAF in 2002 when the NCEA was implemented.
Name: Sue Chalmers
Job Title: Manager, Secondary Examinations
Subject(s): History, Social Studies, Dance, Maths and Visual Arts as a NAF, now an overview of all subjects
Length of Service: 14 years
Background: Head of Department PE, before leaving the sector to work in the sports industry (coaching education) for 7 years. I joined NZQA as a National Assessment Facilitator, before becoming Team Leader and then Manager.

As you can see, the National Assessment Facilitators come from diverse backgrounds within the education sector. Some have been Principal's Nominees, some Heads of Department and others were not teaching at the time they were recruited.  But they all are here to make a difference!
