Hui Mana Tohu Mātauranga

Tēnā tātou katoa,

On Wednesday 24 June 2009, the New Zealand Qualifications Authority in association with Ngā Kaitūhono hosted Hui Mana Tohu Mātauranga at Waiwhetu Marae, Lower Hutt to discuss ways that will ensure quality mātauranga Māori leads to higher educational achievement for Māori learners.

Ngā Kaitūhono was established in April 2008, as one of the key actions of Te Rautaki Māori me te Mahere Whakatinana - NZQA's Maori Strategic and Implementation Plan.

Discussion points for the hui included:

  • What is quality mātauranga Māori?
  • How can we create people of authority within specific disciplines of mātauranga Māori?
  • How can quality mātauranga Māori drive educational success?

The key note speakers were:

Dr Charles Royal: "Harnessing the creative potential of quality mātauranga Māori."
Donna Mariana Grant: "Mātauranga Māori in education: the priorities for realising collective aspirations of learners and whānau." (includes speech notes)

Tawhirimatea & Kaa Williams: "Māori language is the vehicle to convey our thoughts, customs, desires, hopes, aspirations, history, mythology, dreams and the scholarship contained in Mātauranga Māori."
