Te Waharoa offers educational providers a myriad of ways for students to achieve a level 2 qualification.
As the Māori name for the National Certificate in Māori suggests - Te Waharoa is a 'gateway' qualification, an entry-level certificate to encourage learners to strive for higher educational success.
The beauty of this level 2 qualification is that it acknowledges the full range and breadth of mātauranga Māori a student has mastered. All credits from unit standards in field Māori ranging from tikanga to tourism may count towards this
qualification.
There are almost 500 unit standards registered in field Māori in areas like Māori Geography, Hangarau, Putaiao, Māori Performing Arts, Whakairo, Raranga, Hauora and Reo Māori . Check out the update on field Māori by clicking here.
Te Waharoa level 2 requires 80 credits made up of:
|
40 credits at level 2 or above from field Māori
|
|
30 credits at either level 1 or 2 from field Māori
|
|
10 credits at level 1 or above from any field on the National Qualifications Framework.

Māori educationalist Harata Day, who was involved with the development of Te Waharoa, says the qualification's unique make-up allows providers to identify the skill base of individual students and build on them.
"There are hundreds of unit standards that can be credited towards Te Waharoa," says Harata. "Providers and students are spoilt for choice."
In this issue of Ao Kawe Kupu we show how two providers are using completely different approaches to awarding their students Te Waharoa. These case studies highlight the flexible nature of this qualification.
