Mau Rakau on the framework |
|
A new range of unit standards in Mau Rakau has recently been registered in the Māori Performing Arts domain on the National Qualifications Framework. These 8 unit standards, ranging from levels 1 to 4 were developed by the Mau Rakau Whakaruruhau. At present, the Whakaruruhau are working to develop assessment resources. These will include a video for students and tutors showing a demonstrated 'physical' competency at the required standards at each level. The Whakaruruhau are Wetini Mitai-Ngatai, Tukiterangi Curtis, Wiremu Wehi, Howard Morrison jnr, Chris Winitana and Donna Grant. As Donna Grant puts it "The Mau Rakau curriculum was developed at a one-week wānanga at which experts formulated a matrix of physical competency standards. A designated unit-standards writer and liaison with Māori Qualifications Services ensured that the new standards met expectations - a process of expert knowledge and academic rigor working in harmony. Mau rakau is an art form practiced with passion throughout the motu. Therefore it is timely that validation is available through the National Qualifications Framework." Tohu (credits) gained through Mau Rakau can also be used in mainstream qualifications, such as the National Certificate in Performing Arts (General), NCEA 1, 2 & 3, and in the following Field Māori qualifications - Te Waharoa, Te Ngutu Awa, and the National Certificate in Māori Performing Arts. "The benefits of these unit standards is that candidates can gain formal recognition for their skills in this area, especially those of our Rangatahi who are involved in Kapa Haka," says Keri-Anne Stephens of MQS.
