There are currently 16 subfields 'housed' in field Māori and more than 580 unit standards registered in field Māori on the National Qualifications Framework

Some subfields like General Education include a range of different subjects. General Education includes Pangarau, Oranga, Kōrero me ngā Reo, Pūtaiao and Tikanga a-iwi unit standards.

You will also find New Māori Dance, New Māori Music, Taonga Puoro registered under the Māori Performing Arts subfield.

New unit standards and qualifications

The National Certificate in Reo Māori Media (level 4) has just been registered. This qualification includes unit standards designed to assess a broad range of skills including presenting for radio, working with video, writing and proficiency in te reo Māori.

Unit standards under development and review

The Mana Wahine (levels 3-6) and Hauora unit standards (levels 3-6) have been reviewed. The Hauora review was part of a larger project to look at the National Certificate and National Diploma in Hauora.

Qualifications under development and review

A National Certificate in Tourism (level 3) is close to completion. The compulsory unit standards are specific to environmental and tourism Māori practices. It recognises the unique perspective Māori operators bring to New Zealand tourism.

A National Certificate in Tourism Māori (level 4) and a National Diploma in Tourism Māori (level 5) are also being developed. The Whakaruruhau has also reviewed the existing unit standards in the subfield Tourism Māori.

Other National Certificates in field Māori under development are:

  • National Certificate in Customary Fishing (level 3)
  • National Certificate in Customary Fisheries Management (level 4)
  • National Certificate in Tikanga (level 4)
  • National Certificate in Māori Environmental Management (level 4).

National Diplomas in field Māori under development are:

  • National Diploma in Reo Māori Media (level 6)
  • National Diploma in Māori Environment Management (level 5).

The Hauora Whakaruruhau have completed the review of the National Certificate and National Diploma in Hauora. They are now undergoing a technical evaluation and should be re-registered on the National Qualifications Framework in the next two months.

Assessment resources

A range of assessment resources are now available for field Māori. All resources are available at no cost to accredited providers.

The latest assessment resources to become available are New Māori Dance.

Other assessment resources under development include a web-based resource for New Māori Music, resources for providers of Māori Business and Management and Pūtaiao.
