Te Marau Māori

Here turi kōkā 2003

There are currently 16 subfields 'housed' in field Māori and more than 580 unit standards registered in field Māori on the National Qualifications Framework

Some subfields like General Education include a range of different subjects. General Education includes Pangarau, Oranga, Kōrero me ngā Reo, Pūtaiao and Tikanga a-iwi unit standards.

You will also find New Māori Dance, New Māori Music, Taonga Puoro registered under the Māori Performing Arts subfield.

Te Aho Wahine

The Mana Wahine unit standards, from the domain of Te Aho Wahine underwent a full review and have been registered on the National Qualifications Framework. These unit standards can be awarded and credited towards the National Certificate Māori (Level 2) – Te Waharoa, and National Certificate Māori (Level 4) – Te Ngutu Awa.

Fifteen unit standards are available from levels 2-7 with credits from 4-15. They range from facilitating the preparation of a wharenui for a powhiri to determining Māori women’s health status and explaining a current Māori health initiative.

National Certificate (Level 4) and National Diploma (Level 5) Hauora (Māori Community Health)

The National Certificate (Level 4) and National Diploma (Level 5) Hauora (Māori Community Health) are currently being reviewed. Participating in the review are Jolene Grace (Carich Training), Puti Crawford (Trilateral Training), Luana Murray (Te Taitokerau Hauora), Matiu Payne (Kai Tahu, Rewiti Ropiha – Turanga Health) and Teriki Steward (Waipareira Trust).

The qualifications are currently undergoing the quality assurance process with the Framework Registration unit within NZQA.

Reviews are undertaken every 3-5 years to ensure they are still reflecting the requirements of the industry, legislation updates and consistency. Candidates participating in these qualifications are already employed in the industry and are achieving recognition of both skills they already are performing as well as newly attained skills and knowledge.

A private training establishment in Auckland, Trilateral Training, sees the first class of graduates to be awarded the National Diploma Hauora (Level 5) in August 2003. Congratulations to these candidates - we hope to have some candidate profiles for the next issue of Te Huarahi ki te ao tohu.

Māori Business and Management – Resources

Forty-two unit standards in the subfield of Māori Business and Management that were formerly housed in the field Business, can now be found in the field Māori whare.

Not only have the unit standards shifted house, they have also undergone a full review and are available for delivery.

These unit standards range from levels 2-7, and cover a range of disciplines from Māori Office Systems to Finance – Māori.

To assist with the delivery, sample assessment guides are being developed consisting of assessment tasks, candidate information sheets, and judgement sheets. These will be available via this website by December 2003. For further information, contact Tania Saggers.
