Hakihea 2003There are currently 16 subfields 'housed' in field Māori and more than 580 unit standards registered in field Māori on the National Qualifications Framework. The whare graphically represents field Māori. The four cornerstones are Reo Māori, Tikanga, Nga Mahi a Te Whare Pora and Whakairo.
Some subfields like General Education include a range of different subjects. General Education includes Pangarau, Oranga, Kōrero me ngā Reo, Pūtaiao and Tikanga a-iwi unit standards. You will also find New Māori Dance, New Māori Music, Taonga Puoro registered under the Māori Performing Arts subfield.
HauoraThe National Certificate (Level 4) and the National Diploma (Level 5) have been reviewed and are currently undergoing the compliance stage of the quality assurance check within the Authority. Māori Business and ManagementAssessment guides and exemplars have been developed by Noeline Mathews to compliment the unit standards in the subfield of Māori Business and Management. The website is currently under development and we hope to have these resources “live? and available for use early in 2004. Tourism Māori qualificationsThe Whakaruruhau Tourism Māori in November met with the Gayle Sheridan, the CEO of the Aviation, Travel and Tourism Industry Training Organisation (ATTTO) in Wellington. ATTTO have verbally expressed support and endorsement towards this development. The qualifications include:
We expect the two national certificates to be registered on the NQF in January 2004. The National Diploma in Tourism Māori (Level 5) is only in the first stage of the quality assurance process within the Authority. However, we hope that it will be "live" on the NQF in June 2004. It is extremely positive to note that Manukau Institute of Technology have indicated their commitment to offering the National Certificate in Tourism Māori (Level 3) in 2004. Other providers have also indicated their interest in offering the qualifications in 2004 - nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa. Marae cateringDevelopment in the area of marae catering is currently being explored, and may result in unit standards and/or qualifications being registered on the National Qualifications Framework. A hui for the newly established Whakaruruhau is scheduled to take place in January 2004 at Tauhei Marae (40km north of Hamilton). With the assistance of Mr Owen Ormsby (Whakaruruhau Chairman - Tourism Māori), this will include a group of 13 representatives covering the sectors of marae, tertiary, secondary, and the Hospitality Standards Institute.
If you would like to contribute to this development please register your interest your interest in the first instance with the project officer: Justine Te Moananui Funeral servicesThe Funeral Services Whakaruruhau have recently met with MQS and the Funeral Services Training Trust (FSTT) in a combined effort to working collaboratively for funeral services throughout Aotearoa. The Whakaruruhau are scheduled to meet in Wellington on Tuesday 23 December to discuss this further with the MQS team. Reo Māori mediaThe Reo Māori Media advisory group met in early November to confirm and endorse eight new unit standards, and title matrices for National Diploma in Reo Māori Media (Level 5). The unit standards are currently undergoing the quality assurance check within NZQA. Māori Performing ArtsThe Māori Performing Arts Whakaruruhau have developed a new unit standard that focuses on "compiling resource materials for the teaching of Māori performing arts". This unit standard will be available on the NZQA website in January 2004. The National Diploma in Māori Performing Arts is undergoing the quality assurance check within NZQA. Wahi Tapu/ Indigenous StudiesThese are two new initiatives that are being explored and new advisory groups met in Wellington in December. Leon is excited with the development to date, considering this is huge kaupapa with many different variations. Hui are scheduled for early 2004, to investigate unit standard development. New Māori Dance - videoThe video is now available and provides samples of the different combinations of dance that can be utilised. They are young, energetic and fresh are words that come to mind.
