Te Marau Māori

Paenga whāwhā 2004

There are currently 16 subfields 'housed' in field Māori and more than 580 unit standards registered in field Māori on the National Qualifications Framework. The whare graphically represents field Māori. The four cornerstones are Reo Māori, Tikanga, Nga Mahi a Te Whare Pora and Whakairo.

Some subfields like General Education include a range of different subjects. General Education includes Pangarau, Oranga, Kōrero me ngā Reo, Pūtaiao and Tikanga a-iwi unit standards.

You will also find New Māori Dance, New Māori Music, Taonga Puoro registered under the Māori Performing Arts subfield.

Project updates

Governance of Māori authorities

A hui was held to discuss unit standards in this area. If you have expertise/interest in this area and would like to be on the wider reference group or considered for the Whakaruruhau please contact Māori Qualifications Service and include some background about your expertise in Governance of Maori Authorities.

Indigenous studies

Māori Geography

These unit standards will be moved from the field of Social Sciences to Field Māori. All affected stakeholders will be informed of this move.

Māori Performing Arts

This National Diploma has been registered and is available on the NQF.

Putaiao

We will be holding a unit standard development hui in May. If you have expertise/interest in this area and would like to be on the wider reference group or considered for the Whakaruruhau please contact Māori Qualifications Service and include some background about your expertise in Putaiao.

Reo Māori Media

In November 2003, the Reo Māori Media Advisory Group met to finalise eight new unit standards and the National Diploma.

Resources available

A range of assessment materials are available - they are FREE to all those accredited for field Māori unit standards. View online or order copies of resources now. Where possible, please avoid phoning us with your order. On your order, please include:

  • the names of the resources you require
  • details of the provider name, postal address and contact person.

The total number of assessment resources sent out to date has been 1083!

Māori Performing Arts resources - under review

The online Māori Performing Arts assessment resources consisting of New Māori Dance and New Māori Music are currently unavailable as they are under review.

Maori Qualification Services (MQS) wishes to apologise to providers for publishing these resources before internal quality assurance processes were completed.

These resources were developed as assessment support materials and as such should be used as a guide only to help teachers assess students against the New Māori Dance and New Māori Music unit standards registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). In using such guides, providers are reminded that they are responsible for ensuring materials are valid, no matter the source, and that the materials are internally moderated before they are used.

The resources are now under review.

The review has been initiated in response to issues raised in their use by providers. MQS wishes to thank providers for their feedback, which is always welcome. If you have already downloaded and utilised these resources, we recommend that you set them aside until the revised support material are again available.
