Tania Saggers - manager with a vision
NZQA is proud to announce the appointment of Tania Saggers (Ngati Porou) to Manager, Māori Qualifications Service (MQS) in
August, after serving as Acting manager for just under a year.
Tania has worked hard over the last year to re-establish relationships, both internal and external and is committed to ensuring
that its relationships are managed effectively and efficiently.
Tania is encouraged by the positive feedback received from stakeholders, ministers and whakaruruhau that indicate MQS are certainly
on the right track to achieving required outcomes.
Associate Minister of Tourism Hon Dover Samuels recently worked with Tania on the launch of three new qualifications in Tourism
Māori. "In my capacity as Associate Minister of Tourism, I had the opportunity to lead and Launch three new NZQA
Qualifications whereby Tania and her team from the Māori Qualifications Service were tasked with organising these events on my
behalf. Tania is a great role model for her team and displays the strength to motivate others to achieve good objectives and
outcomes. While working with Tania I observed many aspects that would suit her in this role," he said.
Tania's future goals as manager include an increase in the usage of the qualifications available on field Māori, better access
for stakeholders and quality product output.
"It is important that we are transparent with stakeholders and Whakaruruhau," says Tania.
"It's about empowering our people. I see MQS as a vehicle for building and developing field Māori in collaboration with
whakaruruhau."
Tania says that without the support of whakaruruhau who have the skills and knowledge of Te Ao Māori, further development of
field Māori would not be possible.
NZQA, Chief Executive Karen Van Rooyen said, "I am delighted to appoint someone whom I've got every confidence in. I know that she
is going to deliver for the Māori learner - it's great to see. We all support her and I'm sure the wider Māori community
feel the same."
The team is building its capacity and making good progress with current projects. Tania looks forward to the registration of more
qualifications on the Framework in the near future.
Qualifications Development and Evaluation Services General Manager Anne longworth said "with the confirmation of Tania's
appointment and the ongoing support of the Authority I believe we are well placed to continue to develop, maintain, support and
promote unit standards and qualifications that meet the social economic and cultural needs of our Māori stakeholders."
