Kai Tech Ltd - Te Akomanga no nga hua a Tangaroa

History

Kai Tech Ltd is a private training establishment (PTE) in Invercargill that offers qualifications in seafood processing.

The PTE was established by Michelle Trow (Te Atihaunui a Paparangi) and Paki Raumati (Kai Tahu, Ngati Porou) in November 2000 with the blessing of the local iwi, Ngai Tahu and the support of the Seafood Industry Training Organisation. Both Michelle and Paki have vast experience and qualifications in the seafood industry.

Prior to opening it's doors in March 2001, Kai Tech submitted its initial registration and accreditation documentation to NZQA in November 2000.

Between March and July 2001, the school operated under the umbrella of the New Zealand School of Fisheries based in Nelson. The two providers signed a memorandum of agreement that allowed Kai Tech to start operating immediately. As Director Michelle Trow explains "The sooner we got started, the better. We really needed to get the wheels in motion so we could properly assess the needs of our students and the industry."

On the 18th July 2001, Kai Tech received notification from NZQA that is was a registered provider. The PTE was also accredited to assess against unit standards in 13 domains.

Most of these domains focussed on the seafood industry such as seafood processing, seafood retail, aquaculture, food safety, seafood vessel operations, kaupapa mataitai and kaupapa Tangaroa. Although Kai Tech also sought accreditation for domains like interpersonal communications and work and study skills. All of these unit standards are at level 3 or below.

At the end of last year, Kai Tech applied for an extension to their original accreditation. Kai Tech made good use of their local Regional Facilitator Leigh Milmine who developed the seven-point plan. Paki also attended an NZQA presentation about registration and accreditation.
