NEW STRATEGY GIVES AMPTEE A CLEARER FOCUS

The Association of Māori Providers of Training Education and Employment (AMPTEE) has devised a new strategic plan that gives the organisation a clearer focus. The new plan also formalises the organisation’s relationship with the Qualifications Authority.

AMPTEE chairperson, Marei Apatu says the group needed to review its purpose. “We needed to consider how we can meet the needs of our members and better support the Authority’s strategic direction.”
The draft strategic plan says AMPTEE’s vision is to “provide the spearhead (tihangaia) for Māori preparation to participate and achieve in a competitive global knowledge economy.”

Marei Apatu says it was clear at last year’s annual general meeting that Māori providers wanted AMPTEE to have a stronger advocacy role.

“We’re looking at centralising our activities and forming a national secretariat so we can work better with the government departments that have responsibilities for Māori tertiary education. In the past, AMPTEE supported the development of regional groups that could determine what they need on a regional basis and then advocate that position. However, that approach hasn’t been effective for most regions and Māori training providers still need a strong national presence.”

One of the group’s four key goals is to align itself with the goals of government agencies that have a stake in Māori education and training. This includes aligning itself with the goals of NZQA. AMPTEE and the Authority have agreed to a partnership statement that clearly identifies their roles. AMPTEE will provide advice to NZQA on issues impacting on Māori providers. The Authority will fund four meetings of the Association every year and regularly consult with AMPTEE.

AMPTEE members ratified the strategic plan at its AGM in Wellington, on 23 May 2001
