UpSkill eats the elephant

In this issue of Rongopai, the regular AMPTEE column has been replaced by an article written by Upskill Director, Lindsay Davis Goff.

Upskill is a Māori provider in the Hawkes Bay. They were one of the first to go through the new NZQA audit process. The prospect of audit is daunting. But when you get into the process, it proves to be really valuable. We found that by following the self-evaluation workbook and approaching each area in a positive frame of mind, we were able to use the process to improve our organisation.

Upskill turned every policy and procedure that govern key areas of our operation into checklists. For example, a learner file with a checklist on the front is created every time a student enrols at UpSkill. This ensures a standard process is followed and all critical aspects of learner induction, safety and preparation are completed.

It gives me confidence that every learner is receiving a consistent service from UpSkill.

We’ve also been involved in assisting other Māori PTE’s in the Hawkes Bay region through workshops organised by local Regional Facilitator, Lhi Te Iwimate.

The support services offered by NZQA have been of great help in assisting UpSkill prepare for audit. Lhi has continued to provide ongoing support in development of our organisation and we value this enormously.

I know that a lot of Māori PTE’s look at the whole audit process and the seemingly huge amount of work required and sometimes feel it is unachievable.

I use the analogy of the young hunter that with the help of the experienced hunter manages to kill an elephant and says ‘How on earth will we ever eat all this?’ The experienced hunter says ‘Just one mouthful at a time!’
