How are approved degrees monitored?

Generally, NZQA monitors degrees by analysis of an annual programme evaluation report from the provider. This process begins with the first year of delivery, and continues each year for the life of the degree.
Initial monitoring
During the initial years of delivery, NZQA monitoring includes an annual visit to the provider and a report by a monitor appointed by NZQA. The NZQA-appointed monitor will report directly to NZQA. An independent evaluator, also appointed by NZQA, will accompany the monitor for the first year's visit.
Subsequent monitoring
Monitoring will continue for the life of the degree. Future involvement of an independent evaluator after the first year will depend on the outcome of the first monitoring visit and whether or not the provider requests the ongoing participation of the independent evaluator.
Annual Programme Evaluation Report
When a provider considers that the programme and its delivery are stable, and that all established conditions for changing monitoring status are met, application may be made to NZQA to transfer to monitoring by annual programme evaluation report. See page 8 of Monitoring Of NZQA Approved Degrees and Related Qualifications: Guidelines.
