The use of workplace verifiers is becoming a feature of assessment of professional performance, particularly, but not exclusively at the higher levels of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). This ensures that candidates being assessed can have their day-to-day work activities verified as part of their portfolio of evidence.
There is a growing acceptance that assessors can rely on indirect evidence as being equally valid and acceptable as direct evidence, particularly when supported by other sources of evidence. Use of verifiers can assist both the candidate in gaining immediate feedback on workplace performance and the assessor in providing authentication of workplace evidence.
DCCITO has developed a process for the nomination and, in some cases, approval of verifiers by professional associations or companies. The role of verifier has also been formalised through the development of Unit Standard 18203 Verify evidence for assessment for candidate.
Background
This approach was developed as a response to the often conflicting roles that supervisors found themselves in when mentoring and supporting candidates in the workplace and then being expected to assess them/verify their performance.
The verifier is expected to be a technical expert in the area and also to know the candidate's work performance well enough to be able to attest to their consistent performance in the task(s) being undertaken. The other role they play is to authenticate any documentation presented as evidence as being the candidate's own work. This enables an assessor to use the verified evidence and attestations as part of the portfolio of evidence for assessment without being a subject matter expert in the areas being assessed or being in direct control of the candidate.
This approach is now being used by several sectors in the DCCITO, along with a number of other ITOs including the New Zealand Industry Training Organisation (NZITO) and the Seafood Industry Training Organisation (SITO).
