NZQA and Mātauranga Māori

NZQA does not define what mātauranga Māori is and acknowledges that this body of knowledge and the expertise accompanying it is retained within Māori communities.

Ministry of Education research shows mātauranga Māori inspired education pathways, embuing relationships, language, culture and identity are important factors in improving outcomes for learners in the secondary schooling and tertiary education system.

As caretaker of the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF), NZQA’s aims to ensure the approach to quality assuring mātauranga Māori qualifications, programmes and their provision is consistent with Māori values and aspirations.

NZQA’s approach is endorsed by Ngā Kaitūhono and provides a constructive way of coming to a shared understanding about the relevance, value and importance of recognising mātauranga Māori qualifications and programmes on the NZQF.
