Assessment and Certification Rules and Procedures for Secondary Schools - 2008
6.2 New Zealand University Entrance Provisions
- Students will be qualified for entrance to a university in New Zealand if they have obtained:
- a minimum of 42 credits at level 3 or higher on the National Qualifications Framework, including a minimum of 14 credits at level 3 or higher in each of two subjects from the "approved subject" list, with a further 14 credits at level 3 or higher taken from one or two additional domains on the National Qualifications Framework or approved subjects
- a minimum of 14 numeracy credits at level 1 or higher in Mathematics or Pangarau on the National Qualifications Framework
- a minimum of 8 literacy credits at level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Māori; 4 credits must be in reading and 4 credits must be in writing. The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved achievement standards and unit standards.
- Credits can be accumulated over more than one year. Where a unit standard and an achievement standard assess the same learning outcome they are mutually exclusive for both NCEA qualifications and university entrance purposes.
- The Board of The New Zealand Qualifications Authority has approved the list of "approved subjects" for university entrance. The table lists each "approved subject" for university entrance showing which relevant subfield, domain and/or individual standards apply. Note that some common courses of study that are not on the list of "approved subjects" (such as Home Economics and Outdoor Education) may be based on standards from more than one domain. Schools delivering courses of this nature need to be aware of this when setting up students' programmes.
- Students who qualify for entrance to university on the basis of the inclusion of three new approved subjects, Dance, Health and Technology, and the change of status to Music, and students who qualify for entrance to university after 1 June 2008 using the previous version of the 'approved subject' list may apply on the appropriate form to the Manager, Secondary Assessment and Liaison to have their university entrance status recognised under transition arrangements.
