6.1 General Conditions for External Assessment

Examination Clash Management

August Preliminary course selection Advise students that some of their course combinations may be problematic because of timetable constraints or examination clashes.
December NCEA and Scholarship examination timetable published Consider implications for school timetable and individual students.

NCEA and Scholarship results published

Course confirmation

Advise students whose selected courses will generate examination clashes and adjust courses or discuss assessment options as necessary.
1st month May –September

External entry files submitted to NZQA.

Examination clash candidates identified in Exam Report in Key Indicators.

Check Exam Report on the Key Indicators after every file submission.


In consultation with teachers and students adjust standards entered as appropriate.

August Suggested times for examination papers published by circular

Confirm external entries of candidates with potential clashes and discuss how the clash/es may be managed.

For candidates with an examination clash, determine whether all standards entered can be completed within a single examination session. If so, inform candidate that they will complete standards for both examination subjects within the same 3 hour session and liaise with ECM to accommodate this.

September-October Examination Centre Management planning

Liaise with ECM to plan for candidates with examination clashes that cannot be accommodated within a single session.

Send letters to candidates informing them of the sequestering arrangements for their examination clashes.

November Examinations begin Manage examination clashes and sequestering arrangements .
