External assessment

Search for assessment materials

To view external assessment documents, such as past exam papers, you will need to use the search tool. You can search by entering:

  • the achievement standard number - and that will return all documents relating to that standard
  • a keyword, eg math, then use the dropdown menus to choose a level and the type of document you require eg assessment materials. For externally assessed standards you will be able to view:
    • The Standard (defines learning outcomes, together with performance or assessment criteria and examples of their interpretation and application)
    • The Assessment Specifications (explain the assessment parameters for each standard)
    • Profiles of Expected Performance (used to align the marking with the standard for external assessment) from the previous 3 years
    • Exam papers (including resource booklets, etc) from the previous 3 years
    • Judgement Statements (used by the markers to decide the overall result for each standard) from the previous 3 years
    • Assessment Reports (contain summary comments from markers) from the previous 3 years
    • Assessment Schedules (give examples of expected responses and include judgement statements) from the previous 3 years

Note: Exam materials from earlier years may be available on request.

Copyright

Under current legislation, NZQA is able to make use of an exemption clause to include all necessary text, photographs or other illustrations in examination papers without having to seek copyright clearance. This allows the confidential nature of examination content to be preserved.

This exemption does not carry over to any other uses of the examination paper following the actual examination itself. Therefore all third party copyright material has been removed from the versions of the 2002 papers provided on this website. References to the sources of the third party copyright material are included in the versions provided here.
