Commentary
The standard criteria focus on the highlighted key words.
The following exemplars were awarded an holistic Achievement grade in the 2004 examination for the following reasons:
- A draw/paint image has been included.
- The emblem may or may not have been included in the tasks.
- The reader can see what is intended in terms of the design. The work represents what candidates were asked to do in the instructions and is fit for the purpose and the intended audience.
- All of the evidence presented reflects the use of some textual enhancements and these have been applied to the words appropriately. The techniques exemplified here are:
- capitals
- change of typeface and size
- WordArt
- emboldening and word fill
- reverse text.
- Some non-textual enhancements have been applied. These include:
- shading
- gradient fill
- underlining
- use of autoshapes/draw/paint tools
- inclusion of other images
- borders (variety of styles).
How could this work be improved upon?
The layout of the text and images requires more consideration. Some of these have been placed randomly within the outline and not positioned effectively.
The application of a range of design principles would enhance the work. Many of these tasks are too plain and do not demonstrate use of a range of skills. There are few enhancements or, in some cases, too many.
Enhancements need to relate/work together and complement one other. In some exemplars readability is affected; often there is inappropriate use of size or font style that is not effective for the intended audience.
Design skills need to be varied; for example, not everything needs to be underlined or in capitals.
The resizing of an image needs to be appropriate and not distorted. Images should not be cut off, nor placed in such a way that they impede the reading of the text.
All task instructions need to be followed to ensure work is fit for the purpose and the intended audience.
Aspects of these exemplars which do not meet these criteria are:
- filling in the back of the luggage tag with candidate's own information
- shading the back of the luggage tag so it cannot be written on
- filling in the middle of the photo frame with words (where the image is supposed to be placed)
- the use of additional words that are not relevant to the task.
The ability to recognise which text should be emphasised is important.
