Using the Moving Image Production (2004) videotape
For film products and use of technology (90765, 90282, 90606), the Moving Image Production videotape (2004) provides appropriate examples (evidence statements) of some moving image media products, but not all. For example, there are no sample music videos or movie trailers.
This resource is still available from the Ministry of Education (Ph. 0800 660 662: item reference number 11032).
Teachers do not need to include the videotape with moderation materials. However, the items used as evidence statements should be identified in the activity schedule by item number/title.
Some items on the videotape are not at the appropriate standard or are of marginal quality, i.e. they are just above the grade boundary and of minimum sufficiency in terms of quality of work.

Please consider these comments and / or adjusted grades.
Level 2 |
||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | AS90765 version 1 | Credits | 6 | |
| Design and produce a media product and evaluate the process used to create the product | ||||
| Item No. | Title | Genre | Old Grade | New Grade |
| 2 | Be Beautiful | TVC | E | M |
| Rationale: Although the use of technology is skilful and occasionally expert, the product is simplistic and the key message is not strongly presented. Colour shifts and other artefacts render this product just sufficiently polished for low Merit but not sufficiently integrated or outstanding for Excellence. |
||||
| Item No. | Title | Genre | Old Grade | New Grade |
| 6 | Tauranga Fire Service | TVC | A | A |
| Rationale: The specific fire service is not clearly identified and the effectiveness of the television commercial (TVC) is consequently limited. Frequent crossing of the line, inadequately levelled camera, self-conscious performances, uneven audio levels, loose / inconsistent framing and unclear dialogue at times render this product just sufficient for borderline low achievement. |
||||
| Item No. | Title | Genre | Old Grade | New Grade |
| 8 | SWAT! | Short Film | E | M |
| Rationale: Unconvincing jump cut sequence disrupts the audience experience and breaks the illusion. Sound effects are not convincing and effect is therefore limited. High Merit (polished) is more appropriate than Excellence. The product is not convincingly integrated and is not outstanding at this level. |
||||
| Item No. | Title | Genre | Old Grade | New Grade |
| 11 | Lunch | Short Film | A | A |
| Rationale: The item illustrates linear point-of-view narrative and simple manipulation of time but lacks any significant focus other than a blow-by-blow account of heating and eating a pie. The lack of tension in the narrative (there is no significant conflict, for example) results in low audience impact. Essentially the item lacks any significant motivation and is not a convincing, complete media product. Borderline low achievement is barely justified. |
||||
| Item No. | Title | Genre | Old Grade | New Grade |
| 12 | Happy Pool | Short Film | A | N |
| Rationale: Apart from occasional smiles, there is little evidence of any significant interaction between the characters and narrative is not developed in terms of achieving a clear purpose or direction. The item has no evident deliberate structure; is an afternoon's shooting of minimum effort; and lacks creative discipline. The item is an extended sequence that would befit from valid context, considerable tightening and clear motivation. It is not a complete media product at achievement level. |

Level 2 |
||||
| Standard | AS90282 version 2 | Credits | 2 | |
| Use technology in media production | ||||
| Item No. | Title | Genre | Old Grade | New Grade |
| 6 | Tauranga Fire Service | TVC | A | A |
| Rationale: Frequent crossing of the line, unsteady shots, inadequately levelled camera, uneven audio levels and unclear audio, weak and inconsistent framing and insufficient use of tighter shots render the quality of use of media technology just sufficient for low achievement. |
||||
| Item No. | Title | Genre | Old Grade | New Grade |
| 11 | Lunch | Short Film | A | A |
| Rationale: Focus is generally well-controlled but there is little variation in shot size or type. For example, most shots are handheld ECU or CU POVs, including extended bi-directional pans and tilts that are at times uncomfortable for the viewer. Visual editing is limited, e.g. extended single shots without inserts; compression of time demonstrated by simple fast forwarding; simple transitions and titling. The audio contains no diegetic sound or sound effects, and the music bed is a single generic production music track. There is sufficient evidence of competent use of media technology to justify low Achievement. |
||||
| Item No. | Title | Genre | Old Grade | New Grade |
| 12 | Happy Pool | Short Film | M | M |
| Rationale: This item illustrates some deliberate use of techniques to manipulate images, use of a range of shots and angles, and some skill in editing and colour / exposure manipulations. The quality of framing varies from well controlled and considered to loose and lacking in discipline, as does camera operation. Effective control of editing should have trimmed this item considerably. There is just sufficient evidence of skilful use of media technology to justify low achievement with Merit but the level of control is marginal. |
||||
Level 3 |
||||
| Standard | AS90606 version 2 | Credits | 6 | |
| Create a media product using appropriate media technology | ||||
| Item No. | Title | Genre | Old Grade | New Grade |
| 14 | Of Ravens and Writing Desks | Short Film | E | E |
| Rationale: Although the short film is polished and integrated, the maturity of the concept and script exceeds expectations for Level 3 students and the use of adult, experienced actors increases the quality. |
||||
| Item No. | Title | Genre | Old Grade | New Grade |
| 16 | Dead End Beach | Short Film | M | M |
| Rationale: The film does not unfold the title, narrative is unclear and no motivation is established for the protagonist's actions or for the appearance of the antagonist at the beach. No clear point is made, or even a clear question posed to the viewer. Although technically skilful, the item is just of sufficient polish for borderline low achievement with Merit. |
||||
| Item No. | Title | Genre | Old Grade | New Grade |
| 8 | Battle of the Dunes! | Documentary | E | E |
| Rationale: The complexity, development and integration of content are at Excellence level. The use of technology is at Merit level and the documentary displays several areas where expertise is not demonstrated (audio levels, exposure, framing, colour balance, spelling mistakes in titles, lighting, shot choice/composition etc). Overall, achievement with Excellence is appropriate based on the quality of the content. |
||||
| Item No. | Title | Genre | Old Grade | New Grade |
| 11 | My Dad | Documentary | A | N |
| Rationale: The item conveys aroha and grief and evokes an emotional response from the viewer but is marred by poor image and audio quality. The structure is confused and overly repetitive and considerable tightening and re-ordering should have been applied. The item is not of sufficient quality for an Achieved at this level, particularly in use of technology. |
||||
| Item No. | Title | Genre | Old Grade | New Grade |
| 12 | Flat Life | Documentary | A | A |
| Rationale: This documentary is just sufficiently developed and technically competent to justify a low Achieved at this level but content is simplistic and superficial and achievement is marginal. |
