What documents can I find?

NZQA is responsible for the exam papers for all externally assessed standards.

These papers, and the associated documents are available to help with study and learning.

Document types:

Answer Booklet

The booklet supplied to exam candidates in which they write their answers

Assessment Report

An overview of the performance of exam candidates in the subject or standard

Assessment Schedule

The markers' guide - what was accepted, or looked for in candidate answers - the 'correct' answers, as it were. Needs to be read in association with the Judgement Statement.

Assessment Specification

Defines how the assessment will occur - how long the exam will be, or other submission - and the format of the assessment - long or short answer or multi-choice questions, essays, number of questions, or, for submitted work, the nature of the work to be submitted.

Exam Paper

The set of questions to be answered by candidates in the exam room. In some cases there will be a single document; in others there may be separate documents, as below:

Exemplars An actual student answer script, with annotations from the marker indicating why the script was assessed in the way it was.

Judgement Statement

Defines how the different levels of performance were separated from each other - for example that 4 correct elements means Acheivement; 6 means Achievement with Merit, and so on.

National Moderator Reports

The National Moderators Reports contains summary comments from the national moderator to give guidance to asssessors for internally assessed standards.

Profile of Expected Performance
(PEP)

A tool used to align the marking with the standard for external assessment.

Question Booklet

The booklet supplied to exam candidates holding only the questions they are to answer

Resource Booklet

A Booklet in which are the resources (eg. photos, text extracts, maps, diagrams, graphs) required for the exam

The Standard
(Unit or Achievement)

Defines the learning outcomes (what the learner will be able to do, or explain, or demonstrate, or understand, etc), as well as the assessment criteria - how it will be assessed, and usually the topics for which external assessment will occur.

Is that all?

There are internal assessments for things that best can't be tested effectively in exams, for example, speeches, research projects and performances. their students.
