Standards review

Entirely new standards are normally registered for a period of approximately three years in the first instance. At the end of that period they are 'reviewed'. They will normally then be registered for five years.

When standards reach their planned review date, a decision is made by the organisation responsible for the standard about whether the standards should undergo a full review or be 'rolled-over' for a period of time.

The purpose of the review is to ensure that the current version of the standard meets current registration criteria, is fit for purpose for another five years, and takes account of up-dated requirements of the academic, industry, or professional area to which it relates. The review also corrects any shortcomings in the standards identified through assessment and moderation.

A review involves full consultation with groups having an interest or involvement in the standard. Any person or organisation may contribute to the review by sending feedback to the organisation conducting the review.

Expiring standards and Transition arrangements

If significant changes need to be made to a standard to bring it up-to-date, new standards are registered that replace the ones that have been superseded. The new standards have new ID numbers and the replaced standards are designated expiring. Once these standards have expired, they are removed from the NZQA website. The examination papers and reports for these standards are still available.

Qualifications Authority policy is that when standards are reviewed, moderators continue to accept the earlier version during the year. Student results will be accepted for these versions. All external assessment will be based on the latest version of the standard.
