Candidates sitting Bursaries Mathematics with Calculus will be sent letters explaining measures taken to adjust marks following an unusually difficult examination. This year, mobile telephones are banned from examination rooms, largely because of the potential for candidates to use text messaging. The Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority are conducting a provider survey as part of the National Student Index (NSI) Project. When implemented, the National Student Index will provide each tertiary student with an identifier (unique identification number). The identifier will stay with a student for life and be used for all reporting to the Ministry and to the Qualifications Authority (for the National Qualifications Framework). The purpose of the survey is to ensure that the design of the NSI takes into account the systems and processes that providers already have in place to collect student information. Two new General Managers Māori have recently been appointed by the Qualifications Authority. Patsy Karauria, a current employee with NZQA, has been appointed to the role of General Manager, Māori Qualifications Development. Carl Ross has accepted the position of General Manager, Māori Provider Development and Support. In a joint media release the Qualifications Authority and the Teacher Registration Board announced that they have reached an accord on approvals for teacher training courses. Under a new memorandum of understanding, courses and qualifications that lead to teacher registration will be approved jointly by the two agencies. 7 July 1999
