Managing National Assessment reports go online

2 November, 2007

Parents now have easier access to information on school performance with Managing National Assessment (MNA) reports available on the New Zealand Qualifications Authority website.

NZQA produces the reports for every secondary school in New Zealand . The reports assess how well schools are managing their internal assessment processes and are completed at least every three years.

Making the reports available online is one of a series of improvements to NCEA announced by Education Minister Steve Maharey in May this year.

"The MNA reports provide an insight into how well schools are assessing against the national standards," said NZQA Deputy Chief Executive, Qualifications, Bali Haque.

"Open and transparent moderation will enhance public understanding of school assessment systems and help develop confidence in NCEA."

MNA Reports are available for download from the NZQA website and can be found by searching under individual schools.

A total of 411 reports are online. The remainder will be published as they are completed.

Work is progressing on a number of other improvements:

  • Certificate Endorsement: This has been introduced for students studying NCEA this year.
  • Subject Endorsement: Further work is being undertaken prior to the introduction of subject endorsement.
  • Fulltime moderators: NZQA has received a good response to advertisements for up to 31 fulltime and four part-time moderators of internal assessment. The appointment process is underway. The appointment of fulltime moderators will allow the number of students samples moderated to be increased to 10 percent of all student work.
  • Random sampling: A pilot investigating the use of random sampling in moderation is currently underway involving 89 schools.
  • From 2008, 'not achieved' results for internally assessed standards will also be reported. This will help provide greater consistency in reporting of internally and externally assessed standards.
  • A School Results Summary will be issued to all school leavers as a complete record of their performance while at secondary school.
  • The Record of Learning (which records all credits attained towards any national qualification throughout a person's life) will be renamed the Record of Achievement from 2008.

To access MNA reports go to www.nzqa.govt.nz/ncea/assessment/report/mna/ and enter the full name of the school.
