Deadline for fee reimbursement applications

Last year the Government decided that in certain circumstances it will reimburse the unused fees and associated student loan interest of domestic students following the closure of private training establishments.

Students who think they may be eligible for a partial reimbursement are urged to lodge an application as soon as possible.

The deadline for applications is 30 November 2007

Students affected by the failure of a private training establishment may be eligible to have some course fees refunded if:

  • they did not get back the unexpired portion of their fees because fee protection measures failed
  • they were enrolled for courses before 12 September 2006
  • they were actively engaged with study at the time their provider closed
  • they were not offered an equivalent course at an alternative provider or for good reason were unable to take up such an offer.
Applicants should note:
  • Reimbursement does not include course related costs, living costs, or accommodation costs.
  • If they received any form of compensation for their fees from Court proceedings (this includes through the Disputes Tribunal or through liquidation proceedings of the provider), any payment to them in respect of their application for reimbursement from the Government will have the amount of that compensation deducted. Any such compensation received after the Government reimbursement will need to be repaid to the Government (up to the amount of the Government's reimbursement).
  • Only the unexpired portion of fees can be refunded, along with associated Student Loan Scheme interest.
  • Reimbursement payments will be credited as a loan reduction (or on the loan account) where the student paid for the course through a student loan. Otherwise the payment will be made directly to the student.
