Statistics online earlier

14 March, 2007

National statistics for the 2006 NCEA and Scholarship are now available online, a month earlier than last year.

Support material, to help in understanding the national statistics, is also available.

The summaries of the 2006 survey of teachers and examination candidates are also available online. The survey of teachers and students showed general satisfaction with the internal and external assessment process.

The 2006 results statistics show continuing increases in achievement across all levels with 59.3% of the year 11 roll achieving NCEA Level 1 in 2006, 63.3% of year 12 roll achieving NCEA Level 2, and 51.6% of year 13 roll achieving NCEA Level 3.

NCEA qualifications are not tied to year levels and in 2006, 17% of Year 12 rolls, and 6% of Year 13 rolls, attained NCEA Level 1, and 1% of Year 11 rolls, and 14% of Year 13 rolls, attained NCEA Level 2.

A total of 75.2% of the year 11 roll achieved the literacy requirement in 2006 and 82.3% of the year 11 roll achieved the numeracy requirement.

Deputy Chief Executive, Qualifications, Bali Haque said the release of the statistics and survey summaries showed NZQA's commitment to transparency.

"This is useful information for schools and teachers in planning the year, and it is helpful to have it available earlier than in the year."

He cautioned against using the data to compare schools.

"There are a number of factors which influence a school's statistics – including decile, roll numbers and make-up, courses offered, and course design, which are specific to each school."
