NZQA Launches Te Rautaki Māori - Māori Strategic and Implementation Plan
24 May, 2007
The New Zealand Qualifications Authority today (24 May, 2007) launched Te Rautaki Māori me Te Mahere Whakatinana a Te Mana Tohu Mātauranga o Aotearoa, (2007-2012) its first Māori Strategic and Implementation Plan.
The plan was officially launched in a ceremony at Parliament, hosted by the Hon Parekura Horomia, Minister of Māori Affairs and Associate Minister of Education.
The event brought together NZQA's Māori Reference Group, representatives from many of the external agencies involved in consultation prior to the writing of the plan, Māori providers, and members of the educational community.
Sue Suckling, Board Chair of NZQA said: "Te Rautaki is a vital strategy for NZQA. We've developed the plan in consultation with Māori communities and stakeholders and we are working towards a common goal - improved Māori educational outcomes. The plan identifies the role NZQA can play."
As many of the goals in the plan are shared by other agencies, NZQA will form partnerships, particularly with others in the education sector, and work collaboratively to achieve these goals.
Te Rautaki identifies key factors to encourage Māori learners including:
- multiple pathways - different ways to undertake tertiary education and training
- quality courses and providers, with outcomes linked to employability, positive participation in society and strengthened cultural identity
- integrated and collaborative learning
- opportunities to excel in te ao Māori and in the wider society
A key action is around learner progression, and NZQA will promote a greater understanding of the National Qualifications Framework amongst Māori and Māori communities.
Te Rautaki is available in Māori or English.
