Changes to the reporting of NCEA results

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) has finalised details on the reporting of Not Achieved (N) results for NCEA internal assessment carried out by schools.
In May last year the Government announced a series of improvements to NCEA, including the reporting of Not Achieved results for internally assessed standards, for inclusion on students' Result Notices from 2009.
"Schools will manage entries and withdrawals for internal assessment in the same way and to the same 19 September deadline as for externally assessed standards," said NZQA Deputy Chief Executive, Qualifications, Bali Haque. "Results will also be reported in the same way."
"The purpose of this change is to provide comprehensive information on students' strengths and weaknesses and to maintain consistency with the reporting of internal and external results."
Where a student has presented work or evidence for assessment or has been given an adequate opportunity to achieve the standard (consistent with school internal assessment procedures), the outcome of that assessment will be either Not Achieved (N), Achieved (A), Merit (M) or Excellence (E).
Where no result is reported, Standard Not Assessed (SNA) will be automatically recorded for internal entries, as it is for externals that are not attempted.
Not Achieved result gained from internal assessment carried out this year will appear on a candidate's Result Notice in January 2009. It will also appear on their School Result Summary, which summarises all the result notices issued to that candidate while at school.
Five documents will now contain result information:
Annual Result Notice - From 2009, this will record all results for the previous year, including Not Achieved, for both external and internal standards.
Transcript of external assessment results - Sent with the Result Notice, records external assessment results including Not Achieved and Standards Not Assessed (SNA) codes.
Transcript of internal assessment results - Sent with the Result Notice, records internal assessment results including Not Achieved and Standards Not Assessed (SNA) codes.
Record of Achievement - The Record of Learning has been renamed the record of Achievement. This will record only those standards which have been achieved.
School Result Summary - Will summarise all the result notices issued to a candidate during their time at school, and include all results, including Not Achieved.
NZQA Online Statistics Updated
School statistics on the NZQA website now show more detail on assessment results.
Where students have not attempted an externally assessed standard for which they have been entered, these results (SNA - standard not attempted) are now separated from Not Achieved data. This reflects what appears in the candidates' result packs.
All historical results (for years 2002-06) have been updated. Spreadsheets including figures calculated on the previous basis are also available.
Statistics now allow for comparisons by gender and ethnicity combined.
The NZQA website has also been updated in preparation for the reporting of certificate endorsements at each National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) level. This data will be part of national and school-by-school statistics for the 2007 year that will go online by April after verification by schools.
