NZQA notifies Scholarship's top achievers

25 February, 2008

Results have been posted to more than 8000 students who sat the 2007 Scholarship examinations. Letters were also sent to the country's top scholars – the 'best of the best' - who will receive a monetary award, ranging from a one-off $500 payment to $10,000 over three years.

NZQA has now informed eight (8) students that they are the recipients of the country's top academic award - the Premier Award - worth $10,000 per year for three years.

This is a highly competitive examination and the Premier Award is deliberately reserved for the very top 5-10 students in the country.

The winners were selected by an independent advisory group comprising of Gary Hawke (Victoria University), John Hattie (Auckland University), Terry Crooks (Otago University), Jeffrey Smith (Otago University), Cedric Hall (Victoria).

"This year, eight students stood out in the rankings, and were obvious and well deserving winners," said advisory group Chair, Professor Hawke.

"All eight students have achieved three or four outstanding scholarships, which places them in the very top 0.3-0.4 % of the entire year group in the subjects they studied."

A total of 17 students achieved at least three outstanding scholarships in the 2007 scholarship examinations. However, the Premier awards are reserved for the very top 5-10 students each year based on their ranking within the outstanding scholarship category.

The details of Premier Award winners and other prize winners will be announced prior to the Top Scholar Awards ceremony in May.
