Statistics reflect ongoing improvement in achievement

28 March, 2008

National statistics for the 2007 NCEA are now available online, after being launched at a NZQA Board stakeholder function in Auckland last night.

The statistics and support material to assist in understanding the data is online at: www.nzqa.govt.nz/statistics/. School-by-school statistics will be online from Monday, 31 March.

Both Education Minister Chris Carter and Board Chair Sue Suckling addressed last night's the function.

In her address, Sue Suckling said rates of achieving NCEA in each of years 11, 12 and 13 had generally improved over the past three years across decile bands, gender and ethnicity groups. This was the finding of an analysis of student performance in NCEA from 2005-07. This analysis is also available online at: www.nzqa.govt.nz/statistics/.

The 2007 results statistics show increases in achievement across all levels with 62.3% of the year 11 roll achieving NCEA Level 1 in 2007, 64.7% of the year 12 roll achieving NCEA Level 2, and 53.5% of year 13 roll achieving NCEA Level 3.

NCEA qualifications are not tied to year levels and in 2007, 16.3% of Year 12 rolls, and 5.4% of Year 13 rolls, attained NCEA Level 1, and 1.1% of Year 11 rolls, and 13.6% of Year 13 rolls, attained NCEA Level 2.

A total of 76.8% of the year 11 roll achieved the literacy requirement in 2007 and 84.5% of the year 11 roll achieved the numeracy requirement.

Certificate endorsement was also introduced for students gaining NCEA in 2007:

  • of 49,749 candidates gaining NCEA Level 1, 11,292 (22.7%) gained endorsement with Merit, and 2612 (5.3%) gained endorsement with Excellence
  • of 40,017 candidates gaining NCEA Level 2, 6695 (16.7%) gained endorsement with Merit, and 1548 (3.9%), gained endorsement with Excellence
  • of 20,881 candidates gaining NCEA Level 3, 4283 (20.5%) gained endorsement with Merit and 881 (4.2%) gained endorsement with Excellence.

Deputy Chief Executive, Qualifications, Bali Haque, said the statistics provided useful information for schools and teachers in planning the year. He cautioned against using the data to compare schools.

"Factors such as decile, roll numbers and make-up, courses offered, and course design, are specific to each school and these influence a school's statistics."
