Summary of review and consultation process

The unit standards were due for review and industry was consulted widely in the early part of 2005.  The BSCITO consulted with Assessors (6), Training Managers (5), Private Training Provider (1), Industry Experts (3), and a Health Professional (1).  The BSCITO wanted to identify a number of items, namely, what changes were needed to ensure that the unit standards were fit for purpose for another five years.  From there, the BSCITO wanted to identify what changes were needed for the unit standards to reflect current legislation, NZS standards, codes of practice, industry current best practice, and official guidelines and recommendations.  Feedback from these sources identified additions and modifications that would improve performance criteria and range statements, and thereby make the unit standards fit for purpose.

A Health Professional and people in the health cleaning industry were consulted about changes that had taken place and what, if any, further requirements were needed to be incorporated into the respective unit standards.  Changes implemented in this review include changing 'universal precautions' to 'standard precautions', the introduction of NZS 8142:2000, and the inclusion of guidelines for the prevention of the transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

The definition of 'industry practice' was standardised to make it to make it more useable and relate to industry practice in different situations.

Main changes resulting from the review

·        Unit standards 7183 and 7184 use the term 'standard precautions' rather than 'universal precautions'; this change is reflected in the new title of unit standard 7184.

·        Additions and modifications to special notes in line with current legislation and, where required, with appropriate NZS standards, codes of practice, and official guidelines and recommendations.

·        In single element unit standards the element and purpose statement now reflect the title of the unit standard.

·        Additions and modifications to performance criteria and range statements ensure the content of unit standards is clear, reflects current best practice, and outlines the evidence required to establish competence.
